I have had shelties. My all-time favorite dog was a sheltie--smartest dog I
ever owned. I have never shown obedience, but have taken all my dogs to
obedience classes. I think it is imperative both for socialization and just
to make them better companion dogs. Salukis are not the best prospects for
competitive obedience--being of independent nature, but they can be
obedience trained and some have scored well in competition.

I used to show for obediance back in the '70's when I lived in RI.
Shelties. Had three of them.
Now we just have the one. She's a mix most probably black lab and
doberman. She has been a great friend to me over these last couple of
weeks. She's only 2. I obediance trained her myself, using the choke
collar. She is very agile. Loves the water. Because she's only just
two, she is very nimble and attentive.
One night at 11:30 when DH was not home, DD#2 cruised in the driveway
unexpected and used her key in the front door. That dog tore down the
stairs and was barking up a blue streak until DD called her name and
then she gives the whole body wag.
The problem with having dogs is it's a serial love relationship you
have with them. You are going to outlive them most probably. I've got
lots of pictures of all my dogs and they all hold a special place in my
heart.
When I met DH, he had two dogs and I had one sheltie, and we lived in
an upstairs apartment on a very busy street. That was a pretty busy
time for us.
