Re: OT: Dog Show

My all time favorite was a very large male I named "Crosby." I had him
before I met DH. He got killed on our busy street, actually in the
driveway, because he was trained not to go farther but some jerk killed
him dead right there when he was just minding his own business. I am not
kidding you, the next day when I was out of the house, this apartment
got robbed of all my money and my prized Minolta camera. I didn't know
that all those years I had him he was guarding the house, while I was
putting myself through college. Shortly thereafter I got another
sheltie and that's when I met my husband. In 1980 (when John Lennon was
shot), I was pregnant with DD #1 (now she's a music teacher in
Rochester). DH and I had to move from that old apartment in the sort of
bad section of Utica. We moved 5 times in 5 years until we got where I
am now, in a commercial location, so nobody can ever knock on my door
and say I can't have a business here. I named my business "Romy's
Creative Services," because I didn't know in 1986 where my business
would lead. I put up a huge sign that said Romy's Creative Office
Services. I was still on my selectric then but also purchased a Canon
AP500 which I still have and still functions perfectly.

At that time I was getting paid to type student papers for, mostly,
nursing students at SUNY IT (That's SUNY Institute of Technology in
Utica). These were nurses who already had their RN degrees and were
going for their bachelor's degrees. These became what I call the
"supernurses" because they're well versed in ethics. I got paid to
learn all the Medical terminology then and that's when I started
setting up my own medical dictionary. I never added in a word unless I
looked it up and confirmed the spelling. So basically I got paid to
learn the medical terminology. So I was ready, in 1995, when I
abandoned DTP and all other junk I was doing on my computer and went
strictly medical transcription. I still had a walk-in fax business
though, because who can beat the prices we charge for faxing anyway?
That money was pure gravy!

I also had the added benefit of being able to smoke at my desk or in my
car. Nobody can ever tell me I can't smoke at home at my desk!

Boy did I ever get off on a tangent or what?

I have had shelties. My all-time favorite dog was a sheltie--smartest
dog I
ever owned. I have never shown obedience, but have taken all my dogs
to
obedience classes. I think it is imperative both for socialization and
just
to make them better companion dogs. Salukis are not the best prospects
for
competitive obedience--being of independent nature, but they can be
obedience trained and some have scored well in competition.

I used to show for obediance back in the '70's when I lived in RI.
Shelties. Had three of them.

Now we just have the one. She's a mix most probably black lab and
doberman. She has been a great friend to me over these last couple
of
weeks. She's only 2. I obediance trained her myself, using the choke
collar. She is very agile. Loves the water. Because she's only just
two, she is very nimble and attentive.

One night at 11:30 when DH was not home, DD#2 cruised in the
driveway
unexpected and used her key in the front door. That dog tore down
the
stairs and was barking up a blue streak until DD called her name and
then she gives the whole body wag.

The problem with having dogs is it's a serial love relationship you
have with them. You are going to outlive them most probably. I've
got
lots of pictures of all my dogs and they all hold a special place in
my
heart.

When I met DH, he had two dogs and I had one sheltie, and we lived
in
an upstairs apartment on a very busy street. That was a pretty busy
time for us.
