Re: I have a question about blood sugar.

You're asking the wrong question, Phyllis. The real issue isn't
what can he eat or drink, but, rather, why is his blood sugar going
so low and why is it staying there? That's a medical problem, and,
until you find what's causing it, it's like putting a bucket in the
living room to catch a leak rather than fixing the roof.

He doesn't have an endocrinologist, and frankly, none of his other
doctors know much about nutrition. The dialysis dietician wasn't
there today so we'll have to wait until Monday. In the meantime
we'll keep checking, and if it goes any lower, I'll give him more
protein and let the chips fall where they may. I don't want him
going into shock, and the doc can increase his Phos-Lo to take
care of the phosphorus if it is necessary. Sometimes I feel like
a tightrope walker.

My husband hasn't had diabetes for nearly two years, but for two
weeks he has been falling asleep every time he sat still, even at
his desk or computer. Finally took his blood sugar before
breakfast the other day and it was down to 54. It doesn't vary
more than 1 or 2 points.

I've had the same trouble with low blood sugar most of my life,
but I don't care about weight gain. With him being on dialysis,
it is important.

What can I feed him to raise his blood sugar that won't also
increase his weight?

I know many of us are pretty good at playing doctor on the
Internet, but have you asked his docs Phyllis?
