Re: ? for notebook users

I gave the wireless network a try, but it's not for me. I didn't mind the laptop being slow, but it also slowed down my two desktop computers. Can't have that!

Unhooked everything, put the Linksyst wired router back, and have my speed back the way I like it.

Anyone want a wireless router and laptop card cheap?

Neal, I have a new Toshiba, with 1 gig of RAM, and just as you have found, mine runs fairly fast at times, and at other times painfully slow at least with internet. I have not found a problem doing work, but the internet speed varies tremendously, and we do not find that true of our three desktops that are on the network. I'll let you know if we figure out why!

Thanks for the info, Ed.

I took it into the living room for Martha to use, and it seems faster. Strange. I did download a couple of files, and it wasn't too bad.

I think for my intended use, for Martha to use to study and for me to check mail and eBay when traveling, it will be okay.

I finally got this thing hooked to the net, and am downloading some programs.

My question is: Are notebooks extremely slow? I swear I can watch my toenails grow while this does anything.

It is a PII. The wireless network is running at 54 something or other. Advertizing said it does 108, but they lie

Neal
54 is actually *plenty* fast for good file transfer and more than fast enough for good internet performance, so I'm thinking it must be the laptop itself that is running slow.

Now, if you're used to using a much faster pc, that could be what's going on. I used a PIII 733 mHz for 6 years and was quite happy with the speed until I got my new Pentium D 820
2.8 GHz. Now, when I go back to my old pc, it seems as slow as molasses.

One other issue could be the amount of RAM installed. Notebooks of that era did not have a lot of RAM. How much does it have?

Another issue could be that it needs a defrag. Try that and see it if helps. I'm betting a defrag and some additional RAM would make a noticeable difference.

Of course, you're gonna have to start wearing Martha down now if you need to get more RAM.
