When I was in college, our final in Speech class was for a group debate
about human euthanasia. I think Kavorkian was in the news then. I had
this elaborate speech prepared about why I was against it. Then boom -
the day before I was to give my speech, we were at the University
Hospital all day with my dad, who had been having a lot of tests done
because he was in a lot of pain - found out he had pancreatic cancer,
and had anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months to live. Just blew me out of
the water, and I could not give that speech, knowing what kind of pain
he was going to be in for. It was the only C grade I ever got in my
life. I probably could have changed my grade had I asked for something
else to do, but I was just so sickened by all of what was happening I
figured if I could pass the course without doing anything else, who
cared at that point.

The subject matter was just too raw for me then, but I think that was
an exception.

I could probably do that speech now - either side of it. Timing was
just bad then. I even think it would be easier to pretend to be
someone you don't like, or someone with views you don't like.

requires you to play a doctor who performs abortions. You're a die-hard
democrat and you have to play the #1 individual that tried to get Bush
elected. You love this country, but you have to play a member of a
terrorist group. (along those lines)

Remember ... $5,000,000 to do with what you want.

Could you and would you play the part?


Sure. That's a no-brainer for one reason: If the show is about any of
these types of subjects, then it's likely topical and will promote
discussion of those subjects. By playing someone you are opposed to, you
have an opportunity to portray that person in a certain way that may make
the audience dislike her as well. Also, an actor playing a part isn't
endorsing the actions of the character he plays - think of all the actors
who play serial killers, or cops gone bad, or evil aliens out to rule the
world!
