I think lots of people say "...never..." about things that could happen to
them. I know I have. That's how I learned my lesson. And if I am ever asked
about something that could never, or not likely to, happen to me, I try and
preface it with "I've never been in that situation, but I *think*..."

My experience with people who have said, "never," is that saying that is
practically a guarantee that you will be called upon to test how
strongly you mean it.
OTOH, I've noticed that many folks who adamently state "never" are
referring to situations and problems that they've not only never had to
deal with, but will almost certainly never encounter for themselves.
e.g., non-veterans over military age who supported the draft, men who
argue against birth control and abortion under any circumstances, etc..
It's easy to be absolute about something if you're certain it will
only directly involve someone else.
