I hear the gentleman in Afghanistan who converted to Christianity has had the charge against him for converting dropped, so he won't be put to death by the government, but he still must leave because, they say, it is the Muslim law to put to death any Muslim who changes his religion and someone will find him and carry out the death sentence.

If a person's beliefs are strong enough, you can't destroy them. You might get them wondering about things for a bit, but they'll come right back to what's in their heart.
Not always. Sometimes their hearts change.
But not in response to someone who is attempting to "destroy" their beliefs. All that does is hurt and alienate people.
Which is precisely why missionaries need to stay out of other countries, like Iraq, and let those of the Muslim faith continue to be Muslims ... and not have their belief "destroyed" so they can be converted into Christians.
Yeah, I'd have believed that, too, until I took a class in Muslim culture and law last semester.
