I thought it was the BOS's direction that where hyphens were previously
used, the compound adjective should be smooshed together, which would make
it a deliberate evolution per the BOS.

Am I missing something?

Not if you consider BOS to be THE authority on correct English language
usage. Personally, I don't. Whereas I have no problem with their dictates
regarding style, use of Roman numerals, drug abbreviations and such, I have
a big problem with their decisions regarding smooshing compound words
together.
