It's a matter of staying current with usage, and usage changes.
Capping all drugs because you don't know the difference is just not the
same at all, IMO. Actually, I can also us workup as an adjective, the
patient's workup results indicate ...

Ah...I was trying really, really hard to come up with an example of "workup"
used as an adjective and drew a blank!!
As far as followup is concerned, I have no problem with the use of either
"followup" or "follow up" being used as a noun. It's only when it's used as
an adjective that I expect to see that hyphen.
