Re: OT: New wrinkle in immigration issue - Mexico legalizes drugs

Makes me think of the scene in Up in Smoke, where Cheech & Chong are panicking because it's a bust--then Cheech realizes it's "only" Immigration. He explains it's because of a wedding--whenever there's a wedding, everyone turns themselves in to get deported so they can be there. Free meal, free transportation, good deal. That movie's what--30 years old? Hardly seems like a new thing.

A friend of mine used to give food and shelter to an illegal immigrant for a night once a year, while he was making his way north to work. He told her that he worked here for 6 months out of the year, made enough money to support his farm in Mexico during the lean times, then would turn himself in to the Border Patrol and they would take him back to the border, thus saving him trying to make the trip himself. I have only his account, but he led my friend to believe that this was not uncommon.
