No, I'm not overlooking that fact; I just don't think they have made prison to be enough of a deterrent.

I think the crime should fit the punishment. Obviously, it doesn't these days. If you're a hard-core murderer or rapist, I just don't think you should be allowed to return to the community. Period.

And the prisons really don't need the return business. We've already got the highest per
capita rate of imprisonment in the world.>

IMO, we would have more room if we got tougher on hard-core murderers and rapists and carried through on the death penalty for some of the thousands we have sitting on death row.

they get out?

I fail to see where hard work is maltreatment.

It should be enough that we're taking away years, often decades of their lives.

It obviously isn't enough, given the fact that it isn't working very well.

What part of the country do you live in where people still have
outhouses??? Honey, we got rid of those nearly a century ago here in
the northwest.

Just because they'd dig 'em doesn't mean anybody'd have to use 'em. While I do remember seeing working outhouses in my childhood, it's been quite awhile since I've seen one myself. That was meant as a figure of speech--Honey.
