Re: OT - I may be in the minority

I believe, though, that the punishment the jury decided on for
Moussaoui is the best one. He would have been a martyr to his cause if
given the death penalty, and a quick death is too good for him.

This way, this 37-year-old man has to spend the rest of his life, and I
hope he lives to 100, sitting in a prison with no hope of parole.

It will cost the tax payers approximately $30,000 PER year PER
prisoner, resulting in a tax bill of about $1.2 million if he lives for
40 more years.

Add inflation, cost of money, interest rates, etc. and the $1.2 million
will almost double. Our children and grandchildren will still be paying
for this man's incarceration long after most SMTers are gone.

On the other hand, this guy is a low-level terrorist Al-Queda wannabe,
who is schizophrenic, and was not probably hugged often as a child. No
useful or additional intelligence can be extracted from him. In other
words, he is a useless piece of *hit and a PITA.

The 13-mile border fence between San Diego and Tijuana has been studied
as a model. It is a double fence with sensors, etc. and effectively
reduced or eliminated the illegal crossings to the point that smugglers
are now digging tunnels. Last time I heard, the Border Patrol found 39
tunnels.

The San Diego fence cost $3+ million per mile (materials only).

A better return of investment (ROI) would have been to execute
Moussaoui. We save between $1.2 to $3 million, or use that same amount
to build an equivalent one-mile border fence (in his memory, wink,
wink)
