I agree about the woodpeckers. They can sound like a machine gun going off
early in the morning--or sometimes during the night! We have the
red-bellied woodpeckers in abundance. We also occasionally see the very big
ones--forget what they are called. In the winter we get the lovely little
painted buntings. The females are all green, but the males are spectacular
with green, red, purple, yellow--look like little parrots. We also do have
wild parakeets and monk parrots that are, of course, escaped birds. They
don't usually come to the feeder. We only put seed out in the winter. In
the summer all we get are grackles and starlings and red-winged blackbirds
who can empty a feeder in a couple of hours. We have a lot of bluejays,
cardinals, and mockingbirds. The cardinals and bluejays come to the feeder
(which has a mixed seed) but the mockingbirds do not.

Damn woodpeckers! They like to beat on our metal on our chimney at 4:30
a.m.! It sounds like a bloody machine gun. The first time I heard it I
flew out of bed (this is Lakewood after all -- assumed it was a drive by)!
:) Finally, one day I yelled out to the female 'hook up with the ***
so
we can all get some sleep"! This apparently is their way of attracting
females -- I told DH that all the females probably think, what a jerk he's
beating on metal!
My sister in Boise has a gazillion birdfeeders and has a ton of birds. I
think she is nuts! They are messy and noisy! She does get some unusual
ones however, and even some doves! What I like around here is we have
eagles and once in a while a falcon! We will most likely lose the eagles
as
the trees they rest in will be torn down this summer for a development and
they just okayed the destruction of the eagles trees since it appears it
isn't a "nest"! You know, who needs trees to breathe -- global warming is
just a fantasy there is no such thing! Cut all the damn things down.
What
is so stupid is they could leave so many of them and still build but it so
much easy to clear cut (plus they sell the lumber to offset building
costs).
It's such BS!

Sometimes woodpeckers will come to suet feeders, or you can try coating
pinecones with peanut butter and hanging them in the trees. If there's
a chance you might have orioles or fruit-eating birds, putting orange
halves on a nail pounded into a fence or tree may attract them. Were
the peanuts you put out still in the shell? If so, once you attract the
blue jays, they'll be around FOR LIFE. They love whole peanuts!! It
often takes them a few days to find them after you first put them out.
Check online or in a field guide and see if goldfinches live in your
area. If they do, you may want to look into finch feeders that hold
thistle seeds for them. They spend winters down here, so we feed them
in the wintertime, but the seed just goes to waste in the summer, so we
only put those feeders up in the winter.
I don't know what the hummingbird population is like in NM, but we had
TONS of hummers in AZ, and they were so much fun to watch!! There
aren't as many here in the Houston area, but we do have some in the
summertime and during the migrations, so I always leave a feeder up.
You also might try different types of feeders; tray feeders, feeders
with perches, etc. Different types of birds will come to different
feeders. Woodpeckers seem to like the hanging wire mesh feeders, the
ones that hold cakes of seeds or suet. You'll probably find your doves
LOVE tray feeders, but some other types of birds prefer them as well. I
like to use the bird seed that has peanuts and dried cherries in it, as
it really seems to attract the blue jays, cardinals, chickadees, etc.
Oh yeah, my mom sticks raisins in the peanut butter on pinecones too.
She says they really seem to like them.
(Can you tell I really, really like birds? <G>)

Yes, some have reddish-orange head and chest. A couple of the doves
have figured out how to balance on the tray. The house finches don't
like that even a little bit.
Now I would like to know how to attract prettier birds. I put peanuts
out for blue jays, but haven't had any yet. I heard what sounded like
a
woodpecker this morning, but never could see it.
Guess I better go to Wild Birds Unlimited and get a 20# bag of feed!

Do your birds have red chests? When I started feeding birds in AZ,
the feeders were just swarmed with them, and I'd never even SEEN a
house finch before I put out the feeders!
Wait'll the doves figure out how to balance on the perches and feed
directly from the feeder. You'll have to fill it twice a day!

Bambi, don't start feeding birds! We put out a feeder a couple of
weeks ago and now I am starting to regret it.
I think they are primarily house finches. They empty one or more
feeders a day. We now also have six doves feeding on the ground
below the bird feeder. I bought 5# of feed Tuesday, but will have to
go back to the bird store today. We won't make it through the
weekend
I would like to just quit feeding them, but I would probably feel
guilty.
