Over 40 years of breeding horses with about 8 to 12 foals a year, we had 4
sets of twins. In 3 cases 1 of the twins survived. One set both were born
alive, but the weak one died. In another the mare aborted a twin fetus, but
delivered the other normal foal full term (very very rare!), and
surprisingly in one case the weaker of the two twins survived--weighing only
23 pounds (normal foals weigh 75 to 125 pounds) at birth and with almost no
hair on translucent skin. We never thought she would survive, and had a
bunch of problems, but eventually made it. The 4th set the mare aborted
twins prematurely. Usually twins are aborted early, and they may be more
common than we think, because if they abort out at pasture in an early
stage, it may go unnoticed.
In big farms if twin foals are detected in early ultrasound, the vet may
destroy one fetus which hopefully will be resorbed and the remaining foal
will develop normally. That's for the wealthy thoroughbred farms! Most
vets don't even have the equipment or knowledge to do those procedures.
Now you probably know more than you ever wanted to know--sorry!
