There was quite a discussion here http://www.metafilter.com/mefi/46610 about
a clerk not being able to identify a portabella mushroom. It's a long
discussion, so it will take a minute to load (I was going to warn it would
take a while, but I don't think anyone in this newsgroup has dial-up.) The
thread has
become a bit of an in-joke on the site, and it's just too funny that you
would post a similar observation.
Sorry if I look like I'm shilling for the site, but I was absolutely
hysterical that this should be posted here - had I seen this first, I
wouldn't have mentioned the site in my other comment.
Sadly, I would not recognize a rhubarb. I worked in an office where a guy
was planning all year to bring in a strawberry-rhubarb pie, but he got fired
just as the rhubarb was ripening. Perhaps one day I'll taste a rhubarb.
Anyone care to try to explain what it tastes like?

When I brought my groceries to the checkout clerk, she picked up the
two beautiful stalks of rhubarb I was buying, looked them over as if
they were some strange food, then asked what they were.
Is rhubarb really that uncommon a food? We used to have a patch of it
in our back yard. It drove Dad crazy when we'd pick the stalk and just
throw the big leaves on the ground. Mum made the most delicious
rhubarb sauce that she served ice cold on hot days. That and pink or
white currents freshly picked from our bushes were my favorite foods in
the summer.
I stayed away one summer from the strawberries my sister grew 'cause
that patch was where I buried all the dead animals I found on my bike
trips around town. My prize was a dead cat, stiff in full rigor
mortis. Jan never caught on why I smiled while watching her eat those
strawberries.
