Not only did she have five but homeschooling on top was BS. No relief at
all. I also thought there was some issue of him working lots of late hours
and some weekends. So big help he was. Gotta love my favorite state!

Now HE needs frying. :( He killed those kids - she didn't. His
ignorance and WHATEVER that was killed his kids and, in effect,
killed
her too. :(
Oops - hit send too soon. Would you rather he have FORCED her to get
all
the necessary medical care? Was he capable of determining mental
illness
and/or the extent of it, I wonder? I guess it would've been better if
he
would have just held her down every day and forced the meds down her
throat
or committed her and forced her to take them?
Recall that she had been on Haldol before having that fifth baby. You
can't be pregnant and on Haldol, so they took her off of it. She wasn't
put back on it after giving birth because she was nursing. Still, I
think that as soon as that last baby was born her doctors should have
overridden her and her husband and gotten her back on Haldol ASAP.
If this case had been in any state other than Texas she likely would
have been found not guilty by reason of insanity. She claimed that The
Devil told her that her kids would be better off dead and with God than
with her, so she killed them. Does a sane person honestly believe that
"The Devil" speaks to them? No sane person I know of does. From what
I read about this case and Texas law at the time, the grounds for being
"sane" at the time are very lax. She knew she had killed her kids, and
that was enough to have her declared "sane" at the time of the killings.
As for her husband, I think he probably should have been more in tune
with what was going on in the house. Caring for 5 kids alone can't be
easy. Hel, I have 3, with the older 2 being able to take care of
themselves (mostly) by now, and that's enough to make me run screaming
from the house some days. Caring for the kids when he was home probably
would not have prevented this from happening, but it would have given
him a greater appreciation of just what she was dealing with on a daily
basis.
I recall that there was also some religious thing involved here, which
is why she was homeschooling and didn't have a paying job (note that I
didn't say "didn't work" because I know that stay-at-home mother is more
than a full-time job).
All in all, it's a tragic case. Ms. Yates should be treated for her
illness. I think it's punishment enough that she knows what she did,
and she has to live with that.
