That's what I was going to say--can't imagine coloring with gel pens. . .

The Prismacolor pencils are a good entry level pencil, Staedtler makes a nice set (Aquarell?), and if you hit a good art supply store, there should be a gamut of choices, including some really cool foreign brands.

Don't forget Dover books for good things to color, too. They also have stuff online that you can DL as TIFFs and print out (lots free)--especially good when you have kids to entertain.
