I can see it now: {{boing, boing}} "Hey, Ma, where you been? How come we didn't get to go for a ride too? Dogs LIKE rides, doncha know!"
My mom's Bassett pulled that on me once. He's usually really noisy and bouncy when I first get there, and he's also quite an escape artist, so when I stopped by for something one day when Mom wasn't home and didn't get the usual boisterous greeting, I did a quick look-around for him, then started the neighborhood hunt. Up and down the street, checking the porch belonging to the nice lady who gives him doggy treats, hollering and whistling, at my wits' end trying to figure out where the big, floppy-eared galoot could have gone. Finally, I went back to Mom's to call her and break the news that he was on the lam - and found the big slug zonked out in a hole he'd dug behind a big elm tree in the back yard, where I couldn't see him. He never even knew I was there.

LOL. Well, I know you'd think something that important you couldn't forget. With me it's my dogs. We have two, and one of them tends to wander off if you put him out and forget about him. More than once I'd take them out with me in morning to feed horses. They'd go out of sight to potty, and I'd come in to start work and then - maybe even an hour later - realize I'd left them out. When they are in the house they can be very quiet so you don't think anything of it if you don't see them. One night I'd taken them out when I went to check horses, then came back in and went back to watching TV. Suddenly, an hour or more later, I realized I didn't see them. I was in a panic, driving around on our road, wild that they had wandered off. When I came home, guess who was there to meet me IN THE HOUSE? They must have been in the bedroom or some place out of the way lying down and I hadn't looked very hard or called very much before I presumed the worst. Of course a dog is not a child, but still..
