True, but they're still making a choice. They're choosing the known
over the unknown, which may include his being stopped by the system or
even getting bored with it all and not pursuing her if she leaves.

I'm not trivializing the woman's fear as Lord knows it's often
justified, but you can well imagine that it would be terribly
difficult to help someone who has become totally passive and is
resigned to accepting the abusive relationship.
