Re: OT - I'm confused, so what else is new?

I'll be the first to admit that I'm politically and geographically
challenged, but I've lost track of who is the enemy and who is the
friend over in the Middle East.

I stopped writing for a bit to watch the news today and listen to
various talking heads. They give the impression that the problem
between Israel and Lebanon is the fault of the United States for not
getting involved. Then, Iran, Syria, North Korea, and I think Iraq
and
Pakistan (or is it Afganistan, one of the 'stans?) are into this mix
somewhere, but I'm not sure.

I'm sitting here waiting for a few off-this-blue-planet moments when
the people in the space shuttle appear live. After that, I'm back to
my peaceful pretend world of writing where I can at least understand
and control who is a friend and who isn't.

Do the rest of you understand what's going on in the Middle East?

It's a huge tangled mess. Hezbollah is supported by Syria but based in
Lebanon. Until last year, when the "Cedar Revolution" brought in a new
government in Lebanon that was less friendly to Syria - forced Syrian
troops to leave Lebanon after being there for many years - Syria pretty
much pulled the strings in the Lebanese government. Hezbollah is a Shia
group, so it's supported by Iran. The way to Lebanon from Iran is via
Syria. Or so I understand it; it's more complicated than this.

I don't know the answer to this. Someone needs to get these folks to
stop shooting at each other and sit down and talk, but I'm not sure who
that should be at this point.
