Re: OT - I finally found my huge Britannica Atlas

We had friends who worked for Bell Helicopter in Iran when the Shah of Iran
was over thrown way back in the, I think it was the 70s. (They used to send
us the best dang pistachios that were "the shah of Iran's" pistachios).
Anyway they wrote us and told us when things started getting touchy that
Bell Helicopter Company begged them to stay and keep working and assured
them they would get them out if it got bad. Well, they got the CEOs out and
left our friends and other "workers" high and dry. They all had to find
their own way out with just the clothes on their backs. Me, personally, I
would have left the minutes things started getting hinky (hell, I'd never be
there). I wrote her and told her any extra pay or so called assurances from
the company were BS and get the hell out! They made it out but with
nothing, but like I said, the clothes on their back and no help from Bell!
It does boil down to greed, I'm afraid. They were making great money
working there and just stayed. Same with some of these folks working there.
But yes, some are vacationing and why the hell you take little kids to the
volatile an area is beyond me. Especially since our embassy really do not
do much to help anyone overseas at all these days. They used to be quite
helpful to Americans overseas but they don't do much anymore.

Same here, Kath. I heard one person being interviewed saying the slow
reaction of the government was as bad as that right after Katrina. Say
what?

These Americans, by their own choice, are in a foreign land. Yet, they
expect the government to come to their rescue and also do it for free.
I can understand government workers expecting this since they are there
doing a job, but the others?

Although I do feel sorry for the tourists trapped in a war zone,
particularly the small children, who brings a child into a known
unstable area of the world, then complains about the officials who are
doing their best to get them out of danger? Just Google on wars in the
Middle East to see what I mean.

When griping about their rescue, maybe they should remember TANSSAAFL,
or "there
ain't no such thing as a free lunch" and be thankful our government
cares about them instead of bitching.

And then if we just left our people over there at their own devices, our
government would be mean and evil for doing that. It's a no-win
situation,
I guess.

I for one am glad that the United States is willing to rescue its citizens
who find themselves trapped due to an unexpectedly violent conflict.
