There's been a SuperDrive as of 2001: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2001/feb/19super.html

Using Toast, iTunes, iDVD, or various other apps, I can burn data, music, movies, whatever--pretty much drag, drop, and burn. Since the majority of home DVD decks can now play pretty much any kind of disc via one drive, it makes sense we should be able to burn them on one, as well.
