Margie, I, too, was disappointed about halfway through the third book - it's
pretty morose and teenagery angst-ridden. Trust me, pick them back up.
You'll be glad you struggled the rest of the way through 3. I know I am!

I read the first 2-1/2 HP books and enjoyed them immensely, but got
bogged down in the middle of the 3rd one and never went back. But
your description, Kim, is delightful and makes me remember how special
these books are. Maybe one day....
Meantime, for short chapters you can't beat Dan Brown.

Sorry to top post but you'll get over it. <G>
Rowling has said that Dumbledore had to die because the hero has to go
on alone (the "hero myth" in action, as you say). So I do believe he
is actually dead, but wouldn't rule out that a phoenix will reappear.
I still am not sure where she's going with Snape. I didn't believe he
could fool Dumbledore, but the end of book #6 put him squarely in
Voldemort's camp, IMO.
I am also waiting on pins and needles. In the meantime, I have
recorded the "Goblet of Fire" and will be watching it Friday night
and munching popcorn!

Ok, while we are on the topic of books...
Are there any Pottermaniacs here?? I am dying to read the seventh
book
already!!
Rumors are that the last book will be out on 07/07/07!!
In that case, I have a date with Costco on that day <g>
Any theories here about what is going to happen??
I personally think that Snape is going to turn out to be a good
guy.....does anyone else think that??
Spoilers for anyone who may be reading this and hasn't read the entire
series (you have been warned; there are serious spoilers here).
When I first read this last book I thought Snape was completely on
Voldie's side, then I started thinking about it more. Why would he be
giving Harry clues about how to fight Voldie if he were on Voldie's
side? That bit about "until you close your mind" when he was deflecting
anything Harry sent at him was to tell Harry what he needs to do. Also,
what was Dumbledore's meaning when he said, "Severus...please..." Was
he asking Snape to not do the deed, or asking him to get it over with
now?
I'm also not convinced that Dumbledore is truly dead. The fact that his
familiar is a phoenix was clue #1, and there was a phoenix seen flying
away from the funeral, but nothing was said about whether that was
Fawkes. Dumbledore is a very powerful wizard, and I'm not entirely
convinced that his innate protective abilities would have been
completely useless against even that curse; he could merely be "mostly
dead", to quote The Princess Bride.
I think that Harry will be joined by Ron and Hermione in his search for
the remaining Horcruxes, but Harry will have to face Voldie alone in his
final confrontation; that's the "hero" myth in action. Harry will
likely have help from that "R. A. B." who found that one Horcrux, and my
guess is that R. A. B. is Regulus Black, Sirius's brother. I'm also not
entirely convinced that Harry won't have help from Sirius from beyond
the veil; Sirius merely disappeared behind that veil in the wizard's
battle in book 5, and it's strongly implied that he is dead - Kreature
(the house elf at Sirius's house; I forget how his name is spelled.)
responds to Harry as the rightful owner of the house, and Sirius willed
the house to Harry - but is he really??? And I think Snape will show up
at some point during the final confrontation and make his true
motivation known.
Ms. Rowling has said that 2 characters die in this final book, but I
don't think they include Harry or Voldie. A much more interesting
ending would be to have the final battle short-circuit both wizards,
leaving them powerless. The ending, apparently, is what she had planned
all along, but the deaths were unforeseen; the story led that way.
Should be an interesting read when it does come out.
