Re: OT: Air travel carry on restrictions - what's next?

Only once did I feel the "pat down" was inappropriate. But I flew shortly
after 9/11 and they were very rude. Made me send a key ring that was a
Navajo embellished obvious pin home (I wouldn't give it to them, left and
mailed it home) The point on the pin was duller than the point on the
mechanical pencil in my purse, and that was the time they threatened me
literally at gunpoint because I started to go to a chair to take my shoes
off. Now they have a seated area, but that undoubtedly did not start me off
with a good attitude--neither did the one pat down that I feel was
inappropriate!

I have one hip, two knees, and a stainless steel nail in my hand. I must
admit when the buzzers don't go off it makes me wonder what else might get
through. The knees seem to cause more of a reaction than the hip--my fat
a.... might be the cause of that. Hmm I am losing weight--wonder if that
will cause a louder buzz!!!! or higher score, or whatever. The last time I
flew they neglected to tag my carryon that they did thoroughly inspect, and
when I went to board they wouldn't let me on. Had to get someone from the
security area to come down and inspect the bag all over again and tag it,
and I thought I was going to miss my plane! Most, if not all, of my
problems have been here in Miami. Maybe it's better in other airports.

Barb, I fly fairly frequently - 3-4 times a year or more. I've had my
first artificial hip since 2/02, and have flown close to 20 times since
then (counting round trip). Since my second hip replacement in 1/06 I've
flown 6 times. At no time did I feel that my body was invaded. The women
who did the wanding and pat-downs were nothing if not apologetic and
professional. Either I've been very fortunate, or I'm not as sensitive as
you. In any case, I appreciate the fact that these people are doing their
job, and it's for my benefit. The only time since my surgeries that I've
not been stopped was in Atlanta, and I was very upset about that because I
couldn't help but think that someone else might be able to slip through
with a knife or worse.

That's right, it is an every time thing. Sometimes they just do the wand
thing which I don't mind, but it is every time. I understand why. With
the exception of the one time when they didn't have a chair so I could
sit down to take my shoes off and put them back on and they acted as if I
were a terrorist when I started to walk toward a seat a short distance
away, I have always been polite and tolerant of it. That doesn't mean I
have to like it!

I can't understand why you would ask that question? I consider it an
invasion of my person. I don't think anyone outside of the medical
profession which I choose has the right to touch me without my
consent. If
that's strange, then I'm strange. When they pull me aside and pat me
down I
consider it a personal violation. Maybe you wouldn't, but I do. I
have had
one of those "pat downs" be particularly personal--feeling between my
legs
and my breasts. It was a woman attendant, but I felt it went beyond
reason.

Barb,

It is must be a personality thing, because I think it is a small price
to pay. I travel a LOT and while I have never been patted down in this
country, I have been patted down in many foreign countries and by men.
When I take Nina and her wheelchair, then she is patted down and
doesn't seem to mind.

I guess I just wanted to hear you say the words and I guess I just
wanted to say that I am surprised that you would feel so violated.

Janice, I think her joint replacements trigger the alarms, probably
every time (my aunt's did). It's got to get old. I wouldn't like it
either, but I'd do it, of course.
