This is the first place I've ever lived where there are choices for
electric service, phone company, etc. It IS nice!! I'm not sure, but it
seems like if you can get cable service from either Comcast or Time
Warner, though, there's no other cable company available. (Anybody?)
That's why I'm considering satellite when TW leaves the area. I just
haven't heard much good about Comcast.

Which leads me to another question. Are you saying that your grandparents
lose their satellite reception when it gets windy? I'd like to know what
the downsides are to satellite TV. I'd always assumed that bad weather =
poor or no reception, but my friend in Mississippi told me that when the
hurricane came through there, everyone she knew with cable TV lost their
service, but her DirecTV never lost reception. Now I'm puzzled. Anybody
care to share their experiences?

We have had Dish Network for over 10 years. The only way that wind could
affect the signal is if the wind blows tree branches or something into the
signal path in front of the dish.

The only other possibility of wind affecting the signal is if the dish
itself is mounted on a flimsy pole that bends enough to affect the aim.

What does affect satellite signals is heavy rainfall. When it rains hard
here, we usually lose the signal intermittently and the receiver has to lock
back on.

I've heard tell that heavy snowfall also affects the signal, but we wouldn't
know nothin' bout that:).

We've been quite satisfied with Dish, but I'm thinking of going back to
Comcast cable because we recently got a HD plasma TV and to upgrade our
system to HD would cost way more than just switching to cable.

Another incentive to switch is that I also want to concurrently change from
Earthlink DSL service to Comcast's cable internet service. It's way faster
and costs about the same.
