We've had those same problems. This man does the maintenance for some apartments a good friend of my DIL owns. We feel very, very fortunate.
He was doing repairs today to our oldest son's $575,000 house. The roof was leaking badly during the middle of the night and pouring water into the basement. (I'm not quite clear on how.) I wish we had a video of Kevin bailing water at 3 a.m. in his shorts. He was not a happy camper. He said he drank so much coffee to keep going today, he was wired and probably wouldn't sleep at all tonight.

Doesn't sound like fun AT ALL. Tell me, though, how do you find a handy man (or any tradesman) who shows up. I've gotten so fed up. In past have called people for estimates or work, some who've worked for us in past (and been paid promptly with good checks). THey either don't show up at all or show up and then never call back. No explanation of "I don't have time," Nothing. And then folks wonder why they can't stay in businesss.

After texturing all the walls of our house in Roswell and sweating my you-know-what off, I am not getting near any paint. We now have a handy man who can do just about anything and charges a reasonable rate. He has hung ceiling fans, painted, fixed toilet seals, and other small projects.
Unfortunately, my breathing has gotten so bad I can do very little in the way of "projects." Just pushing the trash cans out to the street and back or taking packages to UPS leaves me gasping for air. It is not fun.

Rae <imagining Neal at work with paint while Martha is out - Why do I suddenly feel the need for a strong dring? ... Hmmm.>

I followed her all around the house, making notes as she talked. Later I was very glad I had the notes.

Listen, I'm rather SURE you could barter interior decorating for veterinatary care! LOL. Then maybe suggest cat-proof fabrics

I do okay with the rest of it, mainly my problem was just the color not
being right and I just made it worse instead of better. I don't think
there is a decorator around here anyway. In fact, considering some of
the places I've been in, I'm about sure of it. <G>
I didn't realize a decorator would be that cheap though.

I've only read a couple of the posts on this thread, but what about this
idea?
Martha and I have no decorating or colors skills - none! Each time we
have decided to redecorate or paint, we have hired an interior
decorator. The cost is low, generally a minimum fixed fee - this last
time was $80.
For this house, she came in, made suggestions as to colors, colors on
different walls, the exact colors from a paint chart of the brand of
paint we wanted. She also showed us picture groupings for each wall,
plant sizes, shapes, and placement on tables.
We felt it was money well spent. We now have a muted Southwestern
style, slightly Indian, but almost any type of furniture will work.

Well I was freaking out today, but it's my own fault. I should have
just left it alone. But I went to the hardware store and got some
pearl-colored glaze and sponged that on. Either I didn't do it right,
or it just didn't work well with this color and the amount of light in
there. It looked like (and I apologize for being gross) little kids
had smeared snot on the walls. It was UGLY! And I did the first wall,
thought, ick, but then thought, well it will get better when it dries.
So 2 walls later, I turn around, and it's still ugly. Touched it - it
was dry...so in a panic I hurried up and used the paint I had left to
cover it up. I just got done, just in time for my husband to walk in
the door, and me to act like nothing happened...hee!
To give you an idea of how bad it looked, my daughter came in from
school in the middle of this, and I asked her what the last wall looked
like. She said "it looks like the walls on Nanny McPhee!" She nailed
it, too.
I decided this green is just fine!
And Rae, what kind of house do you live in that is all wood? One of
those fancy log cabin types? We were in one once for a party and it
was huge, and it was gorgeous!

I think you're right about the lighting. This morning it looks fine.
Maybe the fact that the furniture and the bedding against it helps. Or
maybe it is the afternoon light makes it different. That or I'm a
loon! I didn't know those reveal bulbs existed. I'll have to try
them.
The bulbs will make a difference in greens - I have noticed. Hope it helps
you from freaking out like I did!!
