Personally, I don't see a thing wrong with that. To quote a rather
trite bumper sticker, "When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have
guns." If every law-abiding citizen was familiar with guns and armed
himself, it would be a great crime deterrent. The 2nd amendment was
written for good reason.
But that reason had everything to do with militias, for the defense of
the country, and absolutely nothing to do with crime control.
I belong to the American Rifle Association and have handguns.
Is that anything like the National Rifle Association (NRA)? I've long
argued that if the NRA were in charge of the American Automobile
Association, we'd hear arguments from them against the registration of
cars and licensing of drivers, based on the constitutional right to
travel freely. ("They're trying to take away our cars!" "You can have
the keys to my Chevy when you pry them from my cold, dead hand!")
I also
have a concealed weapon carry permit. I bought myself a present. It's
a brand new Smith & Wesson .357 magnum revolver, stainless steel, K
frame, with a 4-inch barrel. THEN, I bought S&W a present of its own.
A Crimson Trace laser grip. Don't even need to aim. Just point the red
dot. Woe to anyone who breaks into MY house.
Have you ever shot anyone? It's easy to boast and talk big, but
actually pulling the trigger is an entirely different matter. When you
shoot someone, it changes you forever, whether you like it or not,
whether you expect it or not. Consider, for example, that if a trained
police officer actually has to shoot someone in the line of duty,
there's a 75% chance that he'll quit the force within the next two
years and seek a different line of work.
You've been reading American Rifleman too much and need to look outside
What anti-gun people choose to ignore is the fact that violent
criminals will have guns no matter what laws are passed. Law-abiding
citizens MUST be prepared to protect themselves and their families.
Calling 911 and waiting for help might be too little, too late. Sorry
if this offends the anti-gun folks here, but that's the way it is.
the US. By your logic, countries like the UK, Switzerland and Japan,
where firearms are strictly regulated, would be dens of crime, and
countries such as Afghanistan, Somalia, and Iraq, where possession of
fully-automatic weapons is commonplace, would be the safest places on
earth. Our safety has far more to do with an orderly society where
people respect each other's rights, where police forces are fair and
effective, and where people are governed by law and not by arbitrary
and capricious rulers.

Eliyahu,
The last I heard, the violent crime rate in the U.K. is higher than the
U.S. Oh, and the U.K. Olympic pistol team has to leave the country to
practice because it's illegal for them to possess their firearms in the
U.K.
