We usually only got one gift, and mine was always a baby doll. But when
I was 5 years old "Santa" made me a swinging doll cradle, and "Mrs.
Santa" made me a little patchwork quilt to fit it. On one of the pieces
it says "Kathleen 5 yrs old". I still have both of them. Santa left the
cradle on our front porch on Christmas eve, while we were opening
gifts. Of course I learned later that "Santa" was really Uncle Mac, and
"Mrs. Santa" was my grandma. I'm trying to convince Meghan that she
needs to take these items...

Okay, I remember from last year that it's not a PC statement, but I
don't really care. Since Halloween is coming up on us so fast, I
thought I'd be the first to bring up the subject of the holiday season
and gift giving.
Mainly, this is because I'm halfway through my own shopping as of
yesterday and was wondering about something. Do any of you remember
your favorite gift when you were a child?
Mine was a plush toy, a powder-blue cat in a sleeping position. That
year I wanted more than anything either an electric train or a cat to
replace the one who had died that summer. Instead, I got a crummy
stuffed cat and pouted all Christmas Day.
Sleepy, though, became my prized toy for years, and he slowly turned
from blue to green from all the times Mum had to wash him. If any of
you read my first novel, you might remember Sue Beth got a similar toy,
so my Sleepy still lives on with her.
What gift, if any, holds a soft spot in your memory? Do you care to
share any other holiday thoughts with us, other than it's WAY too early
to be thinking of shopping?
