New HPV vaccine

Well, a couple of weeks ago, the senate in Michigan passed some bills
pushing to have the HPV vaccine put on the mandatory list for
sixth-grade girls. I shot off a letter at how outrageous this was,
especially since it is being advertised to the public and pushed by
even physicians as a "cervical cancer" vaccine. That very day, I shot
off a letter to my state representative. Today I received his response,
and I have no idea if it would be the wrong thing to do to share it
here, but he is basically on the same page as I, which makes me feel
better. It may not make a difference, but it was worth a shot (no pun
intended). lol. I will quote him as saying "Mandating this vaccine is
not the right action to take." and "...the decision to receive a
vaccine should be left to the parents."
My problems with it is that I resent the fact that they want to assume
that ALL teenage girls are going to be sexually active, when I never
was in high school -despite everyone else being so, that they want to
give this brand new vaccine to ALL sixth-grade girls by rendering it
mandatory (even though NO vaccine is really mandatory, but many parents
do not know that), that they aren't even sure whether not not boosters
are necessary in three to four years, that they don't even know what
the long term effects could be, that I know people on whom it is
already being pushed without informing them that it is a series of
three injections over some odd months and that most insurances do not
cover it (costs something like $300), that they say that cervical
cancer is ONLY caused by HPV when even in their own study it says that
equal numbers of women from both the placebo group and the vaccinated
group, 22 women (ages 16-23 I believe) from each group, STILL developed
precancerous lesions that were not suspected to be from HPV - Ummmm, if
cervical cancer is ONLY caused by HPV, then why do they have
precancerous lesions? lol. That the vaccine only covers two out of the
many, many strains of HPV. That many people have it and don't even know
it, so how on earth do they plan on checking the efficacy? That they
don't want to take into consideration that *I* want to be the person to
have this particular discussion with my daughter WHEN *I* believe we
should have it, and yes, HPV would be right up there with her risks of
contracting HIV in *the talk*, not to mention the fact that they make
no mention of what idiots signed up their 16- to 18-year-old daughters
for the study group anyway and no mention of what sort of lifestyles,
backgrounds, etc. from which these girls came. It is soooo completely
obvious to me that those teenagers with stay-at-home parents will have
a much less chance of even finding an opportunity to have sex than
those who are left to their own defenses, and as far as the girls/women
living on their own - they can make their own decisions based on their
own risk assessments. Anyway, sorry to rant, but it does really chap my
ass. I won't judge anyone for giving their child the vaccine, but I do
ask that you thoroughly research it and do not rely on the drug
manufacturers website alone. All I can say is that you can bet your
arse that they advertise it on TV only as a cervical cancer vaccine
"caused by a virus - who knew?" - batting my eyes - so that you
automatically assume it is the cure for cervical cancer, when it is
not, because they would get no where if they advertised it for what it
really is....a vaccine for a sexually transmitted disease that MAY lead
to cervical cancer. Stepping off of my soapbox now
.
