New thread

I must admit when threads get over 150 they make me crazy. It gets so
convoluted that it is hard for me to follow. I still miss the old days
of the AOL newsreader because it was perfect.

Okay my take on therapy.

Rae, I totally understand what Ed is saying. That could be because I
have been in womens' groups. I don't think that Ed is saying that is
the only way. I think he is saying that by his interpretation it is
the best way, and the way that worked the best for him.

I love womens' groups. I think women who talk about rape with other
rape victims get a certain amount of understanding and compassion that
other women can only guess what it would feel like. I think
infertility groups are the same thing. Even not particularly wanting a
child, you cannot imagine, no matter how much I tell you, what it felt
like to get my period every month and still believing I could be
pregnant. The same can be said for adoption.

I can see where for some, not having suffered the same trauma might
also be helpful. If I was a gambler, I may want to go to GA to
commisserate, but I would also want to talk to a financial expert
(hopefully who wasn't a gambler) to try and rebuild a portfolio that I
had gambled away.

I have been in groups that have been wonderful and have helped me even
if it wasn't for the problem that I centered the group for. I have
also been in therapy groups that have been counter productive. Because
of the fact that I know what good therapy is, I knew to get myself out
of the situation.

I don't think you need to go to an oncologist who has had cancer
himself, but I do think that a breast cancer support group may offer
the same type of hope and encouragement because of the shared
understanding.
