I was told that this jaw problem has mostly only been seen in people who
have cancer and have to take large quantities of the med that Fosamax and
the others like it are derived from intravenously. Follow the directions to
a T about how to take it. Most of my friends are taking Boniva because of
the once-a-month nature instead of one-a-week. Even my very elderly aunt
takes it, and has had no GI problems from it.

I personally would not want to have a fractured hip from osteoporosis. My
grammie died after a fractured hip and so did my mother-in-law. My MIL did
not even live one week, because the bone was so soft that the plate and
screws did not adhere, and the bone quality was so poor that the leg
actually "died". They couldn't amputate because of her condition, and if she
hadn't died before hand, the leg would just have rotted.

That's a very scary side effect. The worst part is that the medication
never goes away because it becomes part of the bone. So, if I take
Fosamax now in my 40s, and need dental surgery 20 years later, I would
still have the risk of getting osteonecrosis of the jaw.
