Re: Fosamax

When you take this med, you have to NOT lie down for about 1/2 hour or so
after taking it. You can do everything else that you do.

Laura

I usually take it, and then work. You take it in the morning not evening.

I was wondering about the Boniva. Heck, so you can't sit or stand easily
for given time. You'd have to be in pretty sad shape not to manage it just
once a month, right?

I was told that this jaw problem has mostly only been seen in people who
have cancer and have to take large quantities of the med that Fosamax and
the others like it are derived from intravenously. Follow the directions
to a T about how to take it. Most of my friends are taking Boniva because
of the once-a-month nature instead of one-a-week. Even my very elderly
aunt takes it, and has had no GI problems from it.

I personally would not want to have a fractured hip from osteoporosis. My
grammie died after a fractured hip and so did my mother-in-law. My MIL
did not even live one week, because the bone was so soft that the plate
and screws did not adhere, and the bone quality was so poor that the leg
actually "died". They couldn't amputate because of her condition, and if
she hadn't died before hand, the leg would just have rotted.

Thanks for that link, Judity!

That's a very scary side effect. The worst part is that the medication
never goes away because it becomes part of the bone. So, if I take
Fosamax now in my 40s, and need dental surgery 20 years later, I would
still have the risk of getting osteonecrosis of the jaw.

Bambi, your post reminded me of local legal ads running here regarding
Fosamax and jaw/teeth problems. I Googled on it, and here is a link to
various sites about it. Whether or not you want to check them out is up
to you, of course.
