Thank you, Jay. Facts certainly speak more to the issue than rhetoric and
the blame game (which are both pointless).
It is hard to fathom that anyone still believes there isn't enough mistakes
from more than one administration and more than one Congress to go around.
Every facet of life is made up of imperfect people (as is this newsgroup)
doing the best they can with what they have. Blaming us for being imperfect
is like blaming us for breathing.
The cost of war is horrendous (always has been, always will be), but since
they've been with us for thousands of years, I'm surprised that so few
people seem to understand the cost of wars and why they are fought.
What bothers me the most is what I see as the lack of patriotism. Our
warriors volunteer to fight to the death so we can keep the freedom we have
(and no other country can match), yet some in this country just blame,
vilify, and grouse. How utterly useless.
Phyllis,
If there is one thing that pisses me off more than anything else, it's
when someone pulls out the "lack of patriotism" argument. It's called
"wrapping yourself in the flag," and it's one of the oldest techniques
in politics to deflect criticism.
It is NOT unpatriotic to demand that when our elected officials send
our soldiers into harm's way, that those soldiers have the best
training and equipment, that there is a clear and achievable goal, and
that they are sent with the numbers and resources to accomplish the
goal.
It is NOT unpatriotic to demand that our elected officials make their
decisions based on facts, not on fantasy, and to re-evaluate their
position as new facts come to light.
That's been what has put me "opposition," more than anything else. The
realization that THIS administration didn't have a clear goal, didn't
listen to anything that contradicted its views, sent our soldiers into
harm's way without adequate numbers and resources, and has failed to
change positions as new facts come to light.
Oh yeah - I've also had more time in the military than Bush, Cheney
and Rumsfeld combined.
