Re: I can now add TV star to my resume

I just recently talked to a company who advertises that they reimburse for
the CMT exam, CECs, etc. Well, that's great, but their rates did not
reflect that.

I commended them on reimbursing and then asked what kind of differential
they paid for their employees to get their CMT. They said they paid
nothing. I guess just the cost to keep it up is fine, but to encourage them
to get it and pay for it and then not to pay more for it if they pass was a
surprise, though not a big surprise.

I know I did not get mine for more money. I got it because I planned on
mentoring and other management areas of the MT biz and I thought it would
look better to at least have the credential, but as an MT, I made no less
money before I acquired my CMT working as an MT, have not made any more
money working as QA than those I know who work in QA that do not have their
CMT, and it really has not paid off moneywise. It kind of is like a noose
around the neck keeping it up because 3 years seems to go by really fast as
you get older! :)

There have been a few companies I know that say they pay more for a CMT than
just an MT, but from a recruiter perspective I have not really seen a lot of
difference (minimally actually lately if any). I will ask a company what
their difference is just for my own benefit of wanting to know and there is
little.

Certification of MTs is valuable to us all to endorse a standard for
doing the work.

Certification means absolutely nothing to a world that will not pay what
the transcription is actually worth.

They will go overseas, they will go to software salesmen, they will go to
mommies-in-jammies, but they WILL NOT GO to the people who could actually
do this the most cost-efficient way.

Every day we hear about people spending millions of dollars on ways to
circumvent the skilled human element of this profession, and so the CMT
means...what, exactly?

If you can sell an entire industry that they only harm themselves by
cutting the skilled human element out of the equation, and then convince
them that the entire industry would be better off with a credentialed and
qualified person--then a credential might mean something.
