Re: New to transcription

Hi Vernon!

You're not the only "odd duck" here! I feel that way here sometimes because
I am not an experienced MT but can do and learn other things too. I am
fairly new to medical transcription but not transcription in general (legal,
911 tapes, interviews, etc) and I'd be happy to give it a try. When I
worked at the DA's office I was one of the few who would read autopsy
reports and was very interested in the whole thing.

Fresh out of MT school and ready to work! Your work sounds very
interesting. Please let me know if I can be of service or if you want to
chat more about it.

PS: I used to live in Houston, Sugarland and Missouri City. Still regret
ever leaving. I take it you are still in Texas?

Doug,

Bingo. Thanks!

The gear arrived today. Since I worked 9 hours interpreting a
deposition, I only just got home. I have plugged the little sucker
into the cradle to charge.

My kids are installing the software on the notebooks.

Today, I landed another job relating to the deposition I interpreted.
The text is custom made for this grande experiment, as it is narrative.

Within the next 48 hours I will start to produce text on the new
machine. If anybody reading this has time to give it a try please just
pipe up. It is important to me that you smile when you see me coming.

Therefore, I'm willing to hurl money in the general direction of
anybody who wants to tackle all or part of it. It's not that long of a
document at about 20 pages. It should be a perfect maiden run.

Regards to all.

Vernon

Ed and everybody,

What I really need to do is put a handle on the cost of transcription
on a per-word basis since this is the traditional basis for pricing
transLATION work.

Would you, or anybody in here, share with me the basis for
transCRIPTION work?

The general basis for transcription work is per LINE. Getting into
exactly what constitutes a "line" has been the cause of many a flame
war here on SMT as well as a number of lawsuits in the real world.
:-D

I'm not rudely asking for any confidential information; just a
panoramic overview of:
a) the billing basis (i.e. per recording hour? per work hour? per
page?) Or any or all of those or something different?

In general, and that's just "general," a line is 60-65 characters.
There are a number of counting methodologies as well as a number of
different opinions on what "counts" as a character towars that number.
And finally, "a price range".

The overall price will depend on who you use, as well as specialty
charges. Prices range from 10 cents per line to >20 cents per line.
Your cost will depend on who you choose, as well as exactly what
you're looking for. Please note that "cheapest" can mean "lousy."

Because my market niche is "we need it yesterday at any cost",
obviously, I will need to contract the work on a similarly expedited,
and presumably, higher priced, basis.

However, at the end of the day, it has to be profitable for BOTH of us
since we are feeding from the same trough.

<My apologies for the folksy Texan metaphors>

Regards and Happy Thanksgiving to all!
