Perhaps my explanation was not clear. You _have_ to have connections to
have this type of arrangement for a group trip that could engage in business
in China. Most individuals, businesses or organizations cannot on their own
pull all the components together to achieve this. If you are not working
under an umbrella with an association who already has the networking, you
cannot even get the permits. It is a multilevel endeavor...think about how
many palms have to be greased for one such as this; thus, the expense.
About 3 years ago when the avian epidemic and the natural diaster devastated
the Asian market, you could travel round trip to Hong Kong or Thailand and
visit 3 regions, staying in the best hotels for a week for less than $700
round trip. Going to China was about the same rate (I was looking to travel
to these areas at the time and went to Cuba instead). The prices are
rebounding, but not to the $5k range, so I would have to ask myself why the
inflated price.
What is the interest by AAMT in this? Why would _I_ be interested in this
cultural exchange to learn _China's public health and tertiary care systems
and emerging technologies_? How would it benefit me...or rather China or
AAMT? I don't believe this was put together to benefit the average MT in
the US, so what IS AAMT's motive? What is MTIA's interest in becoming
educated on China's technology?

I seriously doubt that AAMT is "doing" this trip. It's done by People
to People Ambassadors, an organization established in the 1950s by
Dwight Eisenhower to promote cultural exchange. They are simply using
AAMT's mailing lists as a way to contact possible participants.

There is a reason the cost of this trip is so expensive. I had a close
friend in NJ who wanted to begin a capital venture business within
China...traveling there, getting a commitment of at least $10k per person
to
bring back to the States and invest the money (yes, this man could make a
buck, he was already a multi millionaire). I also have a cousin whose
husband's legal firm does nothing but putting together these types of
trips
and represent foreign investors.
It is a VERY tough thing to do to get US Government support. You have to
have a sponsor already within China...It has to be arranged through a
guide
company (so as to make sure you conform to the cultural expectations of
the
Communist country and not embarrass your group) and you have to prove that
you have enough $$ to match whatever money you garner from the venture in
case you have to repay the investors. Just to get the permit to launch
the
expedition is $10,000.
My friend was making 1/4 million a pop on the houses he was building, so
he
decided the hassle was not worth it. Now, this friend was not one to give
up easily and has traveled to at least half the countries one can visit
and
even has a sponsored village in Thailand where he "paved" the road through
the village as an improvement project.
Yes, if AAMT is doing this for this kind of money, they are making
arrangements to train people in China to do US MT work. Should be
interesting.

Not sure if it's PC to quote from the letter, but what the heck, here
goes!
"Dear Ms. Buxton:
As chief executive officer and 2006 president of the American
Association for Medical Transcription,we are honored to invite you to
participate in an international professional and cultural program.
People to People Ambassador Programs is developing a delegation of
professionals specializing in healthcare documentation and data capture
to meet in China in September 2007. "
Further down in the letter, it continues:
"This delegation will learn about the public health and tertiary care
systems of China, methods of data capture and documentation of
healthcare encounters, and the emerging technologies associated with
these processes "
Next, it says:
"Our delegation will depart for China from Los Angeles on September 16,
2007. Following our professional and cultural program in Beijing, we
will travel to Guilin and Shanghai for further professional and
cultural exchange. We will arrive back in the United States on
September 28."
After talking about being able to bring a spouse or guest, comes the
kicker:
"As People to People Ambassador Programs is a private-citizen effort,
delegates are responsible for their own program costs. The estimated
cost per delegate of guest is $4,995.00 USD."
I think I'll pass, even though it was nice of Peter Preziosi and Vallie
Piloian to think of me in this way.
