The only "brand" I've ever bought is my laptops--I've had a Sharp, a
Gateway, and my current Toshiba, which I am absolutely happy with--ordered
it custom and paid a premium price, but it was worth it.
As for desk tops I've always had them built to my specs by a local business.
I've never found one "off the shelf" that was exactly what I wanted. My
last desk top I stressed that while I wanted the best price he could give
me, QUALITY was most important. I've had it 3 years, and it's the best
computer I've owned. I'm afraid to say how good it has been for fear of
jinxing it!
My son has an HP he is happy with, but I've heard a lot of complaints. I've
heard good things about Dell, but when I talked to them 3 years ago they
didn't want to "build one for me". They insisted on including things I did
not want, and did not offer things I did. Gateway used to have a good
reputation many years ago, but I have not heard good things lately. There
are some good prices on E machines (I think that's the name) and I've heard
some good things about them, too.
I think some things are the "luck of the draw." My computer guru son says a
high percentage of computer components are defective. He stopped building
computers for people just because of the hassle of having to get parts
exchanged and not meeting deadlines as a result! He still builds Linux
servers.
My advice is find a knowledgeable, reputable local person or company and
have it built to your specs. The big advantage of that is if there are
problems there is someone local to take care of it. Beats shipping costs
and time lost when there are problems.

I am going to be replacing my desktop soon, and I was wondering what brands
to steer toward or away. It has been a long time since I have been in the
market for one, and I just don't have a clue as to what kind.
