Very good questions, Ed. My understanding is that over years and years, the CMT exam has changed many times, from point I believe it was only actual transcription, to now when it only involves "snippets." It's hard to get a feel for difficulty because so many of us come to this field with vastly divergent educational backgrounds and experience. I've seen a few sample questions over time - most of which I've considered to be very easy and basic. I can recall taking an online employment test in past - loaded (had a few beers when I came across it) and scored very near to perfect - later discovering a couple of CMTs didn't do so well. However, then you'd find a CMT who'd say that didn't matter <G>
Someone like yourself with another credential such as you have would probably find (I hope) the general medical and terminology questions beyond basic. Some of the questions I saw I could have answered in 7th and 8th grade - okay, so I was in a parochial school in a system that produces a lot of doctors and nurses and the science teacher was an RN <shrug>
Yet I still hear "we don't want any liability if we know too much" type attitudes. I can't figure this out, because I consider myself a partner in trying to assure the best accuracy possible, fully knowing while I sure don't know it all, I do have above-average knowledge that I use to catch and correct or flag discrepancies that human beings make.

Not really paying attention here, but what I don't get is....why all
the bitching about the credentialling. All of you could get
credentialed if you wanted to.
If they pay more, we will get credentialed. Why fight or bitch or
worry for that matter about something that isn't going to happen.
Should we be lucky enough that AAMT or whatever their new name is, get
credentials mandatory, why worry. Then you pay the $200 or whatever
and get credentialed.
If you are worried that you couldn't get credentialed then you should
probably be more worried about the work product that you are putting
out right now than what the future holds.
Give me a break, we don't have any dummies here. If it looks like
there is a chance credentials will add more pay to my pot, I will be
joining AAMT and getting credentialed before I can even post here that
I have done it.

It took me a *lot* of studying, preparation, and traveling to Bakersfield to the testing center (200 miles away) for my exams to get my credentials in cardiac and vascular ultrasound.
I have no idea what the MT credentialing exam is all about, but it took me a huge effort and a lot of energy to finally do it after working very succesfully without credentialing in the field for 25 years.
Of course, the threat of me becoming unemployable because of Medicare refusing to pay for exams performed by non-credentialed techs was very motivating.
Is there anywhere where someone can go and get some idea of what the CMT exam is all about? Is there a sample exam anywhere?
Seems to me that with all the different MT specialties, the exam would have to be very superficial and broad in scope in order to be effective and/or fair.
