I have DSL and enjoyusing it, much more so than the dial-up. I can't
believe I hung onto that dial-up as long as I did. However, if I am
hooked up to a website, say, recording a presentation which sometimes
may be live, if my phone rings from the phone number that shares my DSL
line, I am knocked off of the website and have to wait several minutes
to get DSL-connected again.

I have DSL. Per their instructions, I placed a phone filter (provided
by AT&T) in every phone jack connected to a landline phone in my house
to avoid interference. However, I directly connected the DSL modem
phone cord directly into the phone jack in the wall (without the phone
filter) and I never experienced an internet disconnection when my
landline rings.
DSL uses data. Incoming/Outgoing landline calls use voice. Data and
voice connections are separate but reside in one connection in your
wall phone jack. So, theoretically, there shouldn't be any conflicts,
and you can surf the internet, at the same time receive or make
landline calls without disconnections.
