Before I got involved in foster care and the care of *high end* kids, I
was leaving from work one night and I heard a lot of commotion. I could
see a woman and a boy - all I could see was that he was big and
screaming a lot - not in pain but cursing - and it seemed as if they
were wrestling. They were in an enclosed yard of what appeared to be a
church or school. I drove to the fence and turned on my high beams and
yelled in asking if anyone needed any help. the child immediately
stopped yelling, and most of the fighting, and the woman yelled out,
"No, got it under control". Found out later it was a shelter for high
needs kids. Since doing foster care, I have been in that same position
more times then I want to remember - and on several occasions before the
neighbors got to know me and mine, the police would arrive to
investigate - it has been a long time since they came by - and probably
the last three times they just came up to the screen door or yelled from
the bottom of the steps "Mary, you need us or you got it under
control?" Some of these kids get so out of control they can pick up the
furniture and toss it across the room - no problem! So basically, when
they are in that mode, or rage, it is about getting them into a mummy
hold until they can *get strong* - and sometimes that takes a long
time. Now, imagine if you will, the mom in the store had been dealing
with that type of behavior all morning - all week - to her the whole
thing at the store might not seem so outrageous (stop - I get that it
was!) and she was just too tired to give a poop at that time, and
besides - she had not been able to get to the store for weeks because
of said childs behavior and this was something she had to get done,
couldn't wait any linger - no TP in the house kind of thing. The whole
thing with the toy and the price check - there is NO excuse for that,
IMO.
I think it is sad that the last two generations have been raised,
largely, to think only of themselves, and so many parents don't believe
in setting any limits. I also believe that those parents probably have
a poor set of limits for themselves - but just my opinion.
