Judity, great minds must think alike! :>)
I was the last convert to DSL via AOL. I too have always used AOL
dial-up.
This past February, I think it was, AOL offered a combo deal with
Verizon to get DSL. At the time, I was paying 25 bucks, or
thereabouts, per month for dial-up AOL and unlimited use.
There were two kinds of DSL offered. One was a lower speed than the
other one. I chose the lower speed DSL because it was cheaper.
The offer from AOL was that if you switch to Verizon and get the DSL
(the cheaper one), the monthly charge was $26 bucks or thereabouts per
month with unlimited use. In other words, AOL was reduced to 11 bucks
per month and I got the DSL for 15 bucks per month. These are rounded
figures.
When I first got the Verizon DSL, they sent me a DSL modem. You do
have to pay a one-time charge for the modem which was cheap, less than
20 bucks I think. The installation was a piece of cake, even for a
dinosaur like me!
When I first began accessing AOL via DSL, the whole AOL main page
screen was different, and I didn't have my AOL buttons at the top like
I was used to. At first, I thought this really sucks and I don't like
it. However, like the other posters stated on this thread, when you
get an e-mail with an attachment and/or send an e-mail with an
attachment, the diffference is like NIGHT and DAY. Plus, the
difference in the cost per month was minimal, maybe one buck. I still
have all 7 of my AOL user names too.
I will say that when there is a storm outside, I sometimes get knocked
off of DSL. Very rarely, but it does happen from time to time.
Thankfully, I still have my old AOL software. When this happens, I
immediately go to dial-up AOL, log on the same old way, and use AOL the
way I have always done, and it works. I think having the AOL software
on your computer is imperative as a backup, and I like being able to go
to AOL dial-up when I need to. However, to be perfectly frank, I very
rarely use the dial-up AOL today, though I like having both ways to
hook up to the Internet.
In sum, Judity, I think 27 bucks a month for unlimited use of AOL with
DSL is a great deal. I do have picture files that I send and receive.
I have no more wait time while I am sitting here looking at a white
screen, hoping that the website will pop up that I am going after.
When I think of how many minutes I wasted on dial-up AOL waiting for
screens to pop up because of the slow speed, it makes me sick. The DSL
is, in fact, a time saver, which will allow you to surf the net faster.
Oh, yeah. On more thing, Judity. This is how illiterate I was. When
I first got the DSL, I did not realize that you could click on the IE
icon more than once to access various websites at the same time. In
other words, I could have several websites open at the same time just
by hitting that IE icon. When I discovered that little nugget, I was
in like Flynn.
I hope this helps, Judity. I was the last one in my area to switch
from a typewrter to a computer. I fought it tooth and nail until the
clients began requiring a diskette with the job. Of course, today, how
could I live without a computer?!
Take the leap, Judity, you will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. If an old
dinosaur like me can do it, who still transcribes in DOS, so can you,
my friend! :>)

Same here, Jennie. As long as I can access the message boards using
the excellent old format, I'm staying with AOL. Having the ability to
use seven screen names for different purposes and the wonderful
PowerTools add-on software are another two reasons I like AOL. The cost
of $14.95 is negligible and doesn't upset me to pay it. Heck, that's
about what I pay monthly for my two phones, and I use AOL way more than
them.
Some day I may wander int the 21st century and get rid of my dial-up
AOL, but as long as I'm happy, which I am, why change?
Oh, if someone could send me the like to accessing SMT through Scibera
(sp), I'd appreciate it. I do go to other newsgroups and always seem
to cringe when I read the posts, wanted to scream out, "USE YOUR
SPELLCHECKER BEFORE POSTING!"
