When I was young and dumb, I'd always go for top of the line. Years
ago when my stove went out, I bought me a smooth-top GE Profile, white
on white, with a whole lot of bells an whistles for about $1,500.
Well, guess what? I never used half the crap on that oven, and when
it died about 10 years later, I had to go out and buy a replacement,
just a few months ago actually. The Kenmore smooth-top replacement I
bought cost half, $750, and I love it, love it, love it.
I bought my washer from Sears several years ago. Man, they sure have
come a long way with washers and dryers. I got the plain white color,
which is cheaper, but the model I purchased uses about a tenth of the
water that other washers do. I have noticed a difference on my water
bill, FWIW!
I also elected to get the front-load washer. It holds a HUGE load,
which I like. The only thing is you have to use a certain detergent,
like Tide HE, and there are some other brands too. This washer is
EXCELLENT.
When my dryer blows, I'm going right back to Sears and get me the
plain white dryer that matches my washer. They hold more clothes and
are energy efficient. Don't get sucked in and pay extra to have a
colored washer. Plain white will get the job done just as good as a
teal-colored washer!

Hope this helps. In the autumn of my life, I will become an educated
consumer before I buy anything! ;>)
Good luck!

Soon I'll be in the market for a new washer and dryer. The old dryer is
giving up the ghost - so loud I can't hear myself think at times.
Anyway, someone pointed out to me that there are now machines that wash
and dry in one unit - no unloading. Just looking quickly on line, I
found there are some that really aren't all that expensive, but Thor
brand for 1500 or less and free shipping.
Has anyone had any experience with these? It sounds like a good idea to
save time and space. No more forgetting to toss the clothes in the
dryer. This time of year I often just air dry with wood stove going,
helps humidify and saves electricity, but sometimes you just want to
start them and go.
Now.... if the can get one that also folds....
