Re: GOTOMYPC.COM

Thanks. I just hadn't had time to research it.

Your comments about password protection, etc. are wise. I think I have full
access to the client's office computer but I need a password to log on (not
a heavy-duty one) and another to get in to the patient files where I work.
I have my expander on that computer, as well. Most of the office staff does
not have access to the individual patient files. I'm not sure how it works
in the office, and I've never tried to access any files other than the ones
I work in.

My son has access to my computer (from Colorado), and knows the password,
but I password protect my MT files with a different password, and he does
not have access to that. My server is Linux. That offers much greater
security than a Windows server, but primarily because most of the hackers
are not looking for Linux, just as they aren't looking for Mac! If either
became the most popular there would be security problems. He also has a
Linux server in Colorado now that I can use for backup if my own crashes. I
have had 2 crashes in 3 years, and I haven't found anyone local to work on
the Linux, so I ship it to Colorado. Now I can simply give my clients a
temporary new IP address and use his server if it happens again.

I wish I knew more about the technical stuff, and I'm sure I could learn if
I had the time, but thank goodness for my son. He has an electrical
engineering degree with his major in computer science. He occasionally
teaches classes at a local college. I keep trying to convince him he could
be in business here, but he's too much of a ski and snowboarding fan. I try
to tell him surfing would be just as much fun and much warmer!

You can actually download the application from Microsoft if you have
XP Home version. It's called Remote Desktop Connection (RDC).

Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> Communications

You set it up in the Windows Control Panel so you can access it. You
also have to set up the port in your router to allow the connection.

I suggest if you use this that you use a very very good password to
protect your computer. Do NOT allow incoming connections unless you
have set and use a password for your computer all the time.
