I went to a more expensive diet for my canines because over the last 25
years 4 of my dogs have died of some form of cancer--3 breast cancer, and 1
lymphatic cancer. Before that I never had a dog with cancer, and have
probably owned at the very least 20 or 30 dogs over my lifetime. I have 2
fancy Salukis now, a breed which has an expectant life span of probably 15
years or so, and I do not want to lose them prematurely. At my age, they
may be my last dogs! I'm getting too old to deal with puppies, and too
broke to deal with older rescue dogs which might need extra care because
they didn't have the kind of start I give my dogs.

I hadn't paid much attention to this originally because I've always fed
either Eukanuba or Hill's, but as I was shopping yesterday I realized that
I occasionally toss Ailis a packet of Pedigree for variety. Spent double
for Iams, instead, thanks to this. When I got an overpriced purebred, I
figured only the best for her (LOL--my kids tease me about resenting the
special treatment), but after looking into what's in the various brands, I
think it's worth it regardless of the breed. The only other one she's
really thrived on is Royal Canin--and even she doesn't merit something that
expensive all the time. . . Not sure why I feel she appreciates variety,
but it does seem to suffice if I simply pour hot water over her kibble once
in a while. Her favorite treat? Those baby carrots I get for snacking on!
There's certainly a lot of stuff online badmouthing ALL the commercial pet
foods and a lot of people who swear raw meat is the only way to
go--largely for the same reasons a raw-food diet is better for people,
too.
Glad she's perked up, Ed!

Good news!
Since we stopped feeding Roxie the canned Pedigree, she hasn't had a
single one of her episodes!
