I'd much prefer dying at home, even if forgotten for four years, than
going to nursing home. It's my choice, though most of you probably
would not agree with it.
I just watched a movie on the Sundance channel, "Assisted Living,"
that convinced me I will fight to the death before going to one of
those places again. The memories of the week I spent in the nursing
home/rehab center after my surgery back in 2003 was brought back by
this movie.
Staff of those places do mean well, I guess, but sometime you should
go visit a nursing home and look at the eyes of the permanent
residents. Dead, defeated, despondent are a few adjectives that will
come to mind. They repeatedly go up and down long corridors with
walkers or wheelchairs to fill up long empty days or lying in bed all
day staring sightlessly out windows. I'll never forget going through
the common room and hearing a new resident crying at having to live
there instead of at home.
I started my novel, "Home of the Red Fox," about a better place for
elderly people partly because of being trapped in a place like that,
if only for a week. Watching that movie I named above might make you
think twice about ending up in an assisted living establishment.
Damn, I'm so depressed now.
