Okay, ed or anyone else, I may have a solution. That is, if I can
understand it. In order to upgrade and still not have anyone come
inside my home, would something called wifi be the way to go?

Exactly what is involved in this? The cost doesn't matter right now,
so could you explain it in baby steps what I need to do? I do want to
keep AOL, and I currently only have two landline phones through ATT/
SBC, if that matters.

Thank you all for your patience. Once I get this all done, I can
FINALLY get back to my writing.
