@d57g2000hsg.googlegroups.com:
I wasn't very clear on the "dangers to men," I guess. What I was
circumstances.that there were women in these online dating places just looking for
lonely old men to ensnare. They would sould like they were really
interested in a relationship, then ask for money for "a trip, an
emergency, etc."
The danger is the same for women with regard to the same
There was coverage on local news channels a while ago about somelocal
women who had each been scammed out of a lot of money by a man theymet
online. My friend's mom also met someone online, who told her helived in
another country (don't remember which now). I don't remember all theto
details as this was about 7-8 years ago but she spent all this money
help him pay off his debts so he could come here and marry her(sending
money to a "relative in the same city who would send it to him" viato
Western
Union), sent him money for airline tickets here as he said he wanted
marry her when he got here, etc. She never saw hide nor hair of himand
never heard from him again. The dangers aren't just for men as thereare
as
many men preying on vulnerable women.
This isn't completely pertinent to this current discussion, but I've
always
wondered who is gullible and ignorant enough to fall for those fairly
obvious ebay scams.
The other day, one of my coworkers is talking about this really cool
muscle
car her husband was buying on ebay from some guy in Croatia. She was
in the
process of sending this guy a check for $2500 by Federal Express. The
guy
had specified in his instructions to her that she was not to mention to
Fed
Ex that the money was for an ebay deal because this would "slow the
process
down."
I asked her if she knew where Croatia was. She thought Croatia was a
city
somewhere in the US. I then asked her if she didn't think it strange
that
the seller would specify that she send the money only through Fed Ex
and
then insist that she not write down that the transaction was for an
ebay
item. She was not familiar with internet scams and didn't seem to
think
this was at all suspicious.
After I got done explaining to her that this was an ebay scam, she
expressed
her gratitude and also that her husband would be really upset because
he
wasn't going to get this great deal on the car. (!)
ed
That curls my hair! Good heavens, how can people be so naive? I guess
those not really familiar with the online world might not be as
suspicious, but haven't all these scams related to countries in Africa,
etc., and various other such "too-good-to-be true" situations been on
all the news programs for ages?
