You are right, Margie, at least according to my accountant. When you file
for the extension you are supposed to include your estimated shortfall (if
any). Otherwise there will be penalties and interest. I do not have mine
back from my accountant yet, and know there is a small shortfall, plus the
quarterly payment due for 2007! At least I have it. I prefer a shortfall.
A refund means you loaned money to the government interest free. That just
doesn't sit well with me!

I always understood that filing an extension doesn't get you off the
hook for paying the money on April 15 -- it just gives you more time
to prepare your returns.

Unfortunately, I'm in good shape, tax-wise, this year.

going to owe about $20,000 more than has been withheld, and called our
accountant to have him put in a extension to August with the IRS.
