SCUBA diving does that for me. Remember a physician friend of mine once
said that a doctor is just an educated guesser. Medicine--human or
veterinary--is not an exact science, and most vets do a good job dealing
with patients who cannot voice their symptoms.

In the letter that I wrote them (which I have yet to deliver) I said exactly
that about medicine not being an exact science and that often the
expectations people have are unreasonable. In doing some research on the
issue of hepatic encephalopathy in dogs, however, I discovered that it is
not really a condition so rare that it excuses their failure to diagnose it.
The vet that saw her and reviewed her records when we took her in to be put
to sleep knew almost immediately what she had been suffering from.

I still miss nearly every animal I have ever loved and lost, and at my age
there are many. I still have guilt about a couple I feel I should have
been able to do more to save them. But that is the price we pay for
loving these animals so much, and I could not have imagined my life
without them.

Losing her really hit me hard because while all of the dogs we have owned
have been very special and unique, she was singularly sweet and loving,
despite the fact that she was sick and not feeling well much of the time.
She was also only 10 months old when we had her put down, and while putting
an older dog who has lived a full life down is not easy, it's not the same.
I also keep thinking that if she had been diagnosed early, there is a pretty
good chance that she may have done adequately on a low-protein diet.

I dunno, I really need to accept things and let it go, but the whole thing
just haunts me.

So, when I get depressed, I go SCUBA diving. You go enjoy your fishing.
There is something about the water--lake or ocean, that has a soothing
effect for me and helps me get through tough times.

It has that effect on me too.

Thanks Barb,
