I would be very hesitant to trust Geek Squad if they said that. While
it is true that you cannot "downgrade", you can reformat and do a
fresh install. I also believe that you create a partition or a dual
boot.

I also would make sure, before reformatting, that your system wasn't made
specifically for Vista. I read on a forum where someone with a specific
Sony system, for example, didn't have XP drivers
